Frequent Melt Downs

Young people may have low tolerance to sensory input or demands placed upon them by teachers or parents. Over the course of the day a person may build up emotions until they get too much and they need to be released. This release may take the form of socially challenging behaviour eg hitting out at others, self, harm or destroying property.

High Energy

A person may be unable to sit still, constantly on the go, or engage in risky behaviours.

Low Energy and Activity Levels

A person may appear lethargic, uninterested in engaging in the world or activities, or be sedentary most of the day.

Impulsiveness

A person may be unable to control impulses to jump out of their seat, control their behavior, may be aggressive, and/or frequently “shout” things out without thinking first.

Short Attention Span and Distractibility

A person may have difficulty concentrating on one activity or task for any length of time and be distracted by every sight, sound, smell, and/or movement they see.

Irritated and Uncooperative with Activities of Daily Living

A person may have difficulty getting dressed, going to bed, brushing his teeth, eating, participating in certain activities, or taking a shower. This may then lead to crisis and challenging behaviours.
